The Middle East has progressed past the debate on digitalising ports; now the pressing question is: How far can we go with this transformation?
Across the region, Port Community Systems (PCS) are evolving from isolated tools into connected platforms that unite maritime, landside and government stakeholders, enabling information to move as seamlessly as cargo.
From Port Digitalisation to National Trade Intelligence
Across the Gulf, countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman are pursuing increasingly integrated approaches to maritime and trade digitalisation. Oman provides a particularly relevant example, with its National Port Community System (NPCS) designed to connect ports with airports, land ports, free zones and other logistics infrastructure. This reflects a broader regional direction: moving from port-centric digitalisation towards national and multimodal trade ecosystems.
Data generated across the ecosystem—from vessel arrival notifications and cargo declarations to gate movements, customs releases, truck appointments and terminal events—can be brought together into a common digital environment. Standards such as IMO FAL, IMO Maritime Single Window requirements and UN/CEFACT data models provide important foundations for this interoperability.
From Connected Data to Predictive Intelligence
AI can elevate trade from visibility to predictive intelligence—anticipating congestion, identifying risks, optimising resources, and enabling proactive actions. This is where the evolution from PCS to a broader intelligent trade platform becomes significant. The objective is no longer simply to provide visibility; it is to create a digital environment capable of coordinating decisions across the ecosystem.
